SEA 1724: NorAI – IA based Automatic Berthing
The norAI project is an AI-assisted intelligent berthing system developed by Seaplace to improve maritime docking operations. It combines real-time computer vision and deep reinforcement learning to enable autonomous vessel approach and docking with high safety, precision, and efficiency. Key functionalities include:
-
Manual berth point selection for operator input.
-
AI-based feasibility analysis using neural networks to assess docking viability.
-
Route generation to plan a safe and optimized path to the berth.
-
Autonomous maneuvering for approach and orientation during docking.
-
Final approach supervision to ensure correct alignment and readiness for mooring.
-
Propulsion deactivation once docking is safely completed.
The system works in a closed-loop control scheme, integrating real-time environmental perception, decision-making, and vessel control, while also providing predictive insights to avoid unsafe docking attempts.
This project is financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU funds, under the aid program for AI use cases in the industry, supported by the Community of Madrid.
